 The 20th annual Screen Actors Guild awards took place at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on Saturday night with American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club and Breaking Bad all winning big.

With so many A-list celebrities in one place it was the latest chance for Hollywood’s leading ladies to show off their finest frocks.

 Aldo Liguori couldn't do his job without languages. Liguori is global head of PR at Fast Retailing, the Japanese company behind inteational clothing giants Uniqlo and French label Comptoir des Cotonniers. He is fluent in five languages, including Japanese, which he says gives him "a complete advantage" when liaising with the media and his senior colleagues around the world.

We meet at the Uniqlo headquarters in Tokyo's tallest office building, looking out over the city of people in bright T-shirts and puffer jackets below. Aldo believes his language skills have elevated his career by giving him the flexibility and adaptability to work in many locations. He has expanded his knowledge of companies, products and media "by being able to speak their language and not assuming that everybody's going to be speaking mine".

Although English is widely spoken in the fashion industry, foreign language skills are becoming increasingly important for those aiming for the top of this highly globalised trade. The UK's second and third favourite high street shops, Zara and H&M, are based overseas, while New Look, currently at number one, recently announced plans to expand its presence in Europe and enter the Chinese market for the first time.

Inteational brands like Uniqlo look for language skills when recruiting. Total fluency is not always necessary: the company offers language training for employees who need to improve and Aldo advises against pretending you know it all. "If you are not able to fully understand what someone is asking or telling you, take a step back and ask them to repeat. Even though I started many years ago, that has been a true success factor for me".

Language study may not be à la mode, yet the British Fashion Council has highlighted the power of languages to extend the worldwide reach of UK-based designers and brands. In its latest report, they want to improve the British fashion industry's world standing by focusing more on languages.

Kat Shallcross thinks her degree in French and Spanish helped her land the position of marketing administrator for New Look, checking stock levels in their European stores. "It would definitely have been difficult to have done the job without my language skills. To be able to speak in French rather than just English made everything more efficient."

Her languages proved essential when she had to give a nerve-wracking but successful French presentation at a European team conference, and on visits to Paris and Belgium where "the store managers couldn't have explained everything in English that they explained to me in French".

Foreign travel is one aspect that makes the fashion industry appear glamorous to outsiders. However, you won't get as far speaking only English on these trips, says Patrick Clark, another languages graduate and online editor for glossy magazine Schön! When we speak he is about to leave for Milan to report on Fashion Week, where networking outside shows is a vital part of the job.

"Anyone you meet at Fashion Week is potentially a colleague. I've created a lot of links in Milan with people by speaking Italian a photographer we're working with now is a friend of a friend." Press releases translated into English often have mistakes, so he always reads them in Italian to get a better feel for the label's image.

Native Russian speaker Jana Reynolds works as the inteational development manager at the exclusive N°10_Showroom in Paris, where her mother tongue is invaluable: "If I did not speak Russian 98% of my Russian clients would not be my clients."

Yet she has found that speaking fluent French and Italian, as well as English, has been useful when building her inteational career. "If you speak French or Italian, or you're a designer showing in France or Italy, you show you belong. Fashion is an industry that survives on symbolic value so heavily."

Just after we speak, she emails to let me know she has just sealed a large deal at a trade show with an elderly Italian customer who owns multiple stores in Udine and speaks zero English, which "would have been a massive opportunity missed if I couldn't communicate".

The more languages, the better, it would seem, but which to lea? "Most of the trade happens in France and Italy, but the real money is not in Europe the buyers are from China and Japan," says Jana. Patrick agrees, noting that many people working in Milan showrooms speak Russian and Chinese to attract high spenders from the East.

This trend has been picked up by Asos, which launched its Chinese site in November, and Topshop, which will soon open its first stores in the country. "There are plenty of times when English isn't enough for work," says Timothy Parent, founder of China Fashion Collective. "Many of the designers I work with only speak Chinese. Building relationships and meeting people are incredibly important, and in China you are extremely limited if you don't speak the language."

Despite the allure of the foreign catwalk, there are currently no joint undergraduate fashion and language courses available in the country. This means students interested in developing their inteational prospects must arrange to study a language in addition to their main degree, sometimes at an extra cost. Some institutions, such as the University of the Creative Arts, offer no form of language provision whatsoever.

This may be due to the demanding nature of practical degrees, says Jason Clapperton, head of careers and student recruitment at London College of Fashion. He does stress that all the college's courses emphasise the global aspect of the industry. "If you set up your own label, you're going to have to know how to deal with people in the industry, and they may be from a whole variety of different countries."

London College of Fashion students are encouraged to make use of the university language centre and Erasmus links to study textiles in Lyon or design in Denmark. His colleague Emilie Gautier is keen to point out that leaing a new language and going abroad is a form of creative and cultural exchange, which can influence a designer's visual, as well as verbal, communication skills.

Nottingham Trent University claims that languages are "definitely beneficial" for all their fashion students, yet among those from the UK, only around one in 10 choose to study a language on top of their course. This suggests that by making an effort to acquire a different vocabulary, students hoping to work in the industry will indeed stand out from the crowd.

Being multilingual can help you make the best of opportunities in the competitive fashion world. Although English remains the industry's current lingua franca, the flexibility gained by leaing another language can take your career to the top. As Jana puts it: "you can get by with English, but it's more about the quality of communication. Fashion people are very irrational, emotional, neurotic people, and the safer they feel in your company, the further you're going to get with them."

 When we were girls, my sister and I joked that we would marry our future husbands in the backyard, barefoot, and the reception would be a potluck. And though I filled a hope chest with doilies and cooking supplies, I never dreamed up any other details of that “perfect day,” such as a color scheme or a specific dress.

So when the Marine veteran I love proposed two months ago, I was caught somewhat unprepared. After flirting with thoughts of eloping that very night, we decided instead to have a proper wedding. We’d invite lots of friends, wed at my old country church and have a big feast.

That meant that I had better start to dream.

My mother and I plotted to alter her wedding dress from the 1980s a Victorian-style gown complete with puffed sleeves. Not knowing what I wanted it to look like except that I did want it to look unlike this one I tued to Google images for ideas.

Gradually, my search for “wedding dress” became “chiffon wedding dress”; and finally, “chiffon wedding dress with cap sleeves.”

Then an image of a flowy, chiffon wedding gown stopped me in my tracks.

It was beautiful. A band of delicate flowers trailed from the left shoulder of the tulle cap sleeves down the front and around the back. The base fell into a subtle train. I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

I clicked on the image.

Airuisha, a Chinese company, had posted it on Etsy. I’d heard about Etsy, where small-business owners sell their creative, often handmade wares. Handmade? Off-the-beaten-track? Delightful.

And the price was incredibly low: The company wanted $252 and $30 for shipping for the custom order.

Cautious, I read all of the reviews of Airuisha on Etsy. Online scams were fresh in my mind after narrowly avoiding a travesty while buying a car on Craigslist. Some of the reviews of Airuisha were scathing, from “This company is bad news!” to “I didn’t get what I ordered.” Most, however, were favorable, and the company had a four out of five star rating.

I looked at the dress, looked at the reviews and looked back at the dress. Needing a sanity check, I called my fiance.

“Well, for $280, what could you lose? And it might work out fine,” he said. With 10 years of experience in the military, he doesn’t tend to panic at the little things that rattle me. So I calmed down and ordered the dress.

I had questions about the logistics (and safety) of making the payment online, so I reached out to the seller, and we had a conversation over Skype.

By the end of our call, I was confident Airuisha was legitimate, and I made the payment over PayPal.

The dress came two weeks ago, sealed in a plastic bag. Alone in my apartment, I carefully cut it open and tried it on. The flowers droop a bit, but that’s nothing a needle and thread won’t fix. And it even zipped barely.

It is beautiful.

 No bride has ever asked designer Mark Badgley, half of the Badgley Mischka duo, about incorporating a cold-weather look into her wedding ensemble. Coats and boots just aren’t the stuff of fantasy wedding dreams, he says.

Reality sometimes doesn’t set in until months later, when the forecast is real.

Ideally, though, it should be part of the initial conversation, and certainly by the first fitting, Badgley says, because being prepared for the weather affects other decisions.

“I’d suggest making sure the church or temple or wherever you are getting married has a room to get dressed in, so you don’t have to worry about getting into the place,” he adds.

Afterward for the reception, photos and the goodbye try a cape, certain coats and fur accessories.

Badgley and his partner, James Mischka, favor the cape or capelet, allowing that they won’t keep you as warm, but they’ll work with almost any dress silhouette. Carrie Goldberg, associate fashion editor for Martha Stewart Weddings, says it’s possible to find a flattering coat, although a shorter shrug would be easier to work with.

The gown’s neckline and hemline dictate the outerwear, says Goldberg, and a sleeker style allows more room for a coat. A ballgown or a gown with a long train is the trickiest, but there’s a bubbling trend in ready-to-wear that works for weddings: satin evening coats. Many of these have bell sleeves and swingy trapeze shapes, both of which accommodate a lot of fabric undeeath, but are fancy enough because of the fabric.

She’d probably choose something that isn’t white perhaps a heathered gray, blush pink or icy blue but white is OK, too, if it has been well thought out as part of the look. In that case, the shades of the outerwear and the gown should match, but a metallic sheen or a bit of embellishment can camouflage subtle differences.

Still, don’t go for too much glitz or overwhelming details on outerwear, Goldberg advises, because the focus should be on the face. It’s the same advice she’d give about the dress.

Mischka worries about a full-length coat, however, because it can be bulky, covering up that gorgeous gown and jeopardizing the silhouette. Fur would be his preference because it keeps that glamorous vibe.

And there’s certainly no way to make boots delicate. But sandals or open-toe shoes are too far to the other extreme, and risk looking silly when there’s snow. Pumps are the middle ground.

Large indoor venues also can be cool in the winter. The easy fix, Badgley says, is a sophisticated long-sleeve gown, and there are many options out there now that are as romantic and sexy as a strapless. (Thank you, Duchess of Cambridge.) Goldberg has also seen “convertible” gowns, noting a recent bridal runway look from Carolina Herrera with a detachable, reversible bolero that looks like a V-neck if you wear it one way, a boatneck if you wear it another. Both ways you get sleeves and more coverage. A short cashmere or angora texture would add delicate texture and could be wo again on a first-year anniversary as a sentimental statement, she suggests.

Also think about the photos: Are they indoor or outdoor? Or does it depend on the day? A pristine snowfall makes a beautiful backdrop, says Mischka, but you can’t count on it.

If you are lucky to get that winter wonderland, his advice to brides is to put on your best Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model face, and grin and bear it. Goosebumps won’t show up in the pictures, and you’ll see the gown in all its glory.

And, he says, “You should have your new husband to keep you warm.”

Sail away into history without spending a cent

But you don't need a big checkbook to pull off these styles - Target, H&M and Zara are all coming out with very cool embellished pieces that struck a chord with people on and off the red carpet. In fact, the Phillip Lim for Target comic book-inspired BOOM sweater was seen on celebrities like Jessica Alba and Nicky Hilton.

Designer Collaborations: Designer collaborations are nothing new - in fact, many don't know that Karl Lagerfeld did a collection for H&M back in 2004. So, while it may not be a brand new trend, 2014 will be another big year for these pairings, which bring high design to the masses...without the hefty price tag. I loved the result of this year's hottest designer collaborations, from Phillip Lim's collection for Target, to Anna Dello Russo and Isabel Marant's collections for H&M -- all of which sold out almost instantly. And the Inteet reflected this frenzy, with the #1 trending retail search terms on Ask.com coinciding with launches of these lines. With Kate Moss' recent renewal of her partnership with Topshop and Beyonce signing on to work with H&M, my bet is that we'll see some really fantastic collections from both brands in 2014 - and I predict we'll see that same rock star style reflected in those designs as well.

Crop: We saw crop tops and midriff-bearing styles making their way onto the runways (from Phillip Lim to Balenciaga), red carpets (Scarlett Johansson) and stages (I probably don't need to remind anyone about Miley Cyrus) this season, and next year's lines aren't ready to give up the trend. What's interesting, and perhaps not surprising, is that these looks don't necessarily play as well to the general population. Questions about this style spiked on Ask.com late this year, and then just as quickly died out. The site also polled its users, finding that only 25% said they'd consider donning the crop look.

Flats: From Chloe and Prada to the Birkenstock comeback this year, flat sandals are still on trend. I often use flats to style my clients, even on the red carpet (because of her amazing stature, Charlize Theron wears flats on the red carpet flawlessly). With so many brands offering stylish looks, many people, including celebrities, are moving toward choosing comfort over heels, without having to give up a flattering outfit.

Why they’ll marry in 2014: They’ve been engaged for so long (since April 2012) that even the rumors about their pending nuptials have died down. The couple famously stated that they wouldn’t get married until everyone had the right to do so — and with DOMA being declared unconstitutional over the summer and nine more states legalizing same-sex marriage in 2013, we’re certainly on the right track. Plus, it’s been over a year since Pitt said, "The time is nigh... It's soon. I got a good feeling about it."

What the wedding will be like: We’re picturing a small ceremony at their home in France, where they can escape the paparazzi. Their six children — Maddox (pictured above), Zahara, Pax, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox — will all have special roles in the wedding. They won’t release photos, they won’t comment on their marriage, but they’ll be spotted wearing wedding bands on the red carpet.

Why they’ll marry in 2014: This couple has also been engaged since 2012 (August). Plagued by constant reports of trouble in paradise and, in contrast, speculation about a baby on the way, it may be a relief to put the rumor mill to rest. "We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job," Aniston told Us Weekly. If 2014 doesn’t prove too busy (she’s current filming Horrible Bosses 2, and he’s working on the script for Zoolander 2), this could be the year.

What the wedding will be like: Aniston strikes us as a low-key beach bride; we’re envisioning a relaxed destination wedding on a private island (they are A-listers, after all), surrounded by friends and family. She'll wear a minimalist gown that reflects her red carpet style.

Lauren Conrad & William Tell

Why they'll marry in 2014: The reality star tued fashion designer/lifestyle blogger got engaged to the "Something Corporate" guitarist tued law student in October. While she reportedly "wants to take her time and enjoy the process," another loose-lipped friend revealed, "Lauren would like to get married next year, possible in the early fall."

What the wedding will be like: With Conrad's classic style, DIY skills, and party-planning experience, we're picturing a Pinterest dream wedding brought to life. There will be rustic touches balanced by glamorous elements, like chandeliers above each table with succulent centerpieces. She'll add plenty of sentimental touches, and she'll probably end up starting some new wedding trends (even the "love" ring she wears next to her engagement ring started a frenzy).

With his musical background, the groom is in charge of the entertainment — and we think he'll opt for a live band over a DJ. One things for sure, though: Don't expect to see the wedding on TV. Conrad told Us Weekly, "Everything is healthier without cameras around," and after chronicling her life for two seasons on "Laguna Beach" and five seasons on its spin-off, "The Hills," she's swo off doing any more reality TV "involving my personal life."

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West

Why they’ll marry in 2014: Engaged in October 2013, Kanye already revealed that they’re aiming for a summer 2014 wedding. With no budget constraints to worry about and top wedding planner Sharon Sacks likely handling the major elements, it shouldn't be hard to pull it off.

What the wedding will be like: Considering that Kanye rented out a baseball stadium just for the proposal, we’re expecting an over-the-top wedding. Besides, the Kardashians aren’t exactly known for being understated. And even though it’ll be the third trip down the aisle for Kim, this marriage will be the first for Kanye. Momager Kris Jenner recently confirmed that it'll be "big."

Reportedly, the couple wants to host their celebration at the famed Palace of Versailles in France, and there will be fighter jets. The wedding will be filmed (obviously) but privately, so that they can shop around the video. We can't wait to see baby Nori and her cousins Penelope and Mason as the adorable flower girls and ring bearer.

Jessica Simpson & Eric Johnson

Why they’ll marry in 2014: Engaged since November 2010, the wedding plans were put on hold when Simpson became pregnant with the couple’s daughter Maxwell, bo in May of 2012. She soon got pregnant again, giving birth to their son, Ace, in June of 2013. Simpson famously struggled to lose the baby weight after Maxwell, but now, she's back down to her pre-pregnancy weight just six months after Ace's birth — perhaps finding extra motivation due to her upcoming wedding. Sherevealed to USA Today that the wedding is a "good goal for me. It's good for me to feel the best I've ever felt when I walk down the aisle."

What the wedding will be like: In October, the pair was spotted scouting wedding locations in Capri for a summer 2014 wedding. We’re envisioning a romantic affair, covered in pink and white floral arrangements, and the couple's two children will be very involved in the wedding ceremony.

Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi & Jionni LaValle

Why they’ll marry in 2014: This Jersey Shore couple also put their wedding plans on hold due to pregnancy; son Lorenzo was bo in August of 2012. But judging from the latest season of Snooki & Jwoww, the wedding plans are now in full swing; they’ve been filmed searching for a wedding location, meeting with planners, and the bride-to-be even found her dream dress during a shopping trip with her BFF Jenni "Jwoww" Farley.

What the wedding will be like: We’re picturing an elaborate Jersey wedding — an over-the-top cocktail hour with free-flowing drinks and more food than you could possibly eat, followed by a five-course sit-down dinner, and capped off by a Viennese table for dessert. Why they'll marry in 2014: Privately engaged since 2006, they happily shared the news on Twitter right after same-sex marriage was legalized in New York in 2011. "We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date," wrote Harris.

The parents to three-year-old twins Harper and Gideon (bo via a surrogate) recently moved from Los Angeles to New York City, purchasing a $3.6 million brownstone in Harlem together. It's worth noting that the move was planned before Prop 8 was overtued in Califoia; "It would be great to move the ring from my right hand to my left, but Prop 8 won't allow us to do that," Harris said of Califoia's ban on same-sex marriage. Why they’ll marry in 2014: The former 'Nsyncer proposed to Michael Turchin in August 2013. After attending former band mate Chris Kirkpatrick’s wedding together in November, Bass hinted at his own wedding plans: "We’ve slowly but surely started planning it. It’ll be a year from now. But it’s a lot. It sure is a lot."

What the wedding will be like: Bass revealed that, as a gay man, he never thought he’d even have the opportunity to get married, so he’s planning on making it one to remember. "I love a party. It's going to be nice and big and over the top," he told ABC News. And the wedding may be televised; "The network offered us a big wedding special. Knowing myself in the 1980s, growing up a gay kid in Mississippi, I would loved to have seen something on TV I could relate to and go, 'Oh, my gosh, I could do that!'"

They want their guests “to come completely over-the-top high fashion, like you're heading to the MET Ball or the Royal Wedding," and the after-party will be equally extravagant. They might "send out personalized onesies to all our guests so that at midnight after the reception it tus into a pajama party," he revealed. "How fun would that be?"

Why they'll marry in 2014: Following the rapper's proposal October, the Glee star bride-to-be wasted no time getting a jump on the wedding plans; she was spottedshopping for a wedding gown at Monique Lhuillier just a week after announcing her engagement!

While her motto is "happy wife, happy life," she's revealed that Big Sean is also "so involved" with the plans. "We definitely bounce things off of each other [and] we're always on the same page about everything, which is probably why we're getting married."

What the wedding will be like: Rivera has been enjoying the "Cinderella, Princess moment" of trying on gowns, so we're picturing a dreamy fairy tale wedding — with some amazing musical performances from Big Sean's industry friends and maybe even the cast of Glee.

What the wedding will be like: Like many brides-to-be, Vergara's dream wedding has changed since she first started planning. In the November 2013 issue of Lucky, she claimed she couldn't picture herself having an over-the-top wedding. "Maybe we will just have a little dinner on Capri," she told the magazine. But just a few months later, she told People, "If I'm going to do something, it's going to have to be a big event."
